I am a grad student who always carries a laptop along with several books and notebooks. I've had a tough time finding a good laptop carrier that could also hold much of anything else -- most were too stiff to hold more than one or two thinner books. This bag puts the laptop into a stiffer rear compartment and has a larger space available for other books, chargers, and anything else you might need. There is also an organizer and several smaller pockets located around the front of the bag, making it easy to carry most things. One additional note about the laptop holder is that it has a sleeve-like opening for holding papers that you need to keep their shape.
On the whole, I think this is a great bag. I should warn you that this is a big bag. If you don't need to carry a laptop plus a fair amount of other materials, I wouldn't recommend one this size. Also, I have only had this for a month -- not nearly enough time to comment on its durability. That being said, the bag does seem to be well-built.
UPDATE, December 19, 2010 -- I have now had this bag for almost two years, and it is still in great condition. No busted seams or zippers. Take it to work every day and use it as my carry on for trips.
